Samsung 'Galaxy Gear' smartwatch leak reveals built-in camera

Samsung 'Galaxy Gear' smartwatch leak reveals built-in camera

Did you hear? Samsung is reportedly announcing a smartwatch called the "Galaxy Gear" on September 4. Excited? Great, because we've got some more details on the smartwatch courtesy of tech site GigaOm.
In what could be Samsung's most innovative new product to date (outside of gorgeous and pricey curved OLED TVs), the "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch will reportedly have an OLED screen around 2.5 to 3-inches with a 320 x 320 resolution, a possible 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and "pretty decent battery," according to GigaOm. The tech site's sources also claim the smartwatch will have NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE to connect to smartphones and a built-in camera (probably not as awesome as this), and speakers in the clasp.
Additionally, GigaOm reports the "Galaxy Gear" will have a built-in accelerometer, and "the usual touch, swipe and select type gestures but will likely not have text-input". On the latter, we would probably bet there will be some kind of voice dictation feature.
Twitter and Facebook support will supposedly be available at launch and the smartwatch could run Samsung's own apps that only work with the company's app store, as opposed to putting them up on Google Play. Although unconfirmed, this could mean the Galaxy Gear only works with Samsung's own Galaxy-branded smartphones and tablets.
What the Galaxy Gear won't be is a standalone phone device, according to The VergeSamsung's smartwatch will be another "companion" device that tethers to a smartphone or tablet.
As we noted last week, Samsung has a history with tinkering with smartwatches. The world wasn't ready for a smartwatch at the time. That, and the tech wasn't powerful enough. Perhaps things will be different this time around, now that gadgets like Google Glass, the Nike Fuelband and other wearables are considered "cool.
